If you are into camping, or mountain hiking, having a good set of tools is most important. A good compass, for example, is a very handy tool. Taking care of your equipment is another thing you need to know how. Here are some basic, easy to do, things you need to know about your compass.
Today I will mention the compass model, that has liquid within it. It is a special compass oil, that makes it work well.
The tools cleaners Whetstone suggest you may need are a screwdriver, a plastic syringe and the mentioned compass oil, which can be found in any hunting store.
First of all you need to locate the “filling screw” of the compass. Usually it is located on the back, sometimes on the front side of the compass. Lift the compass and turn it with the filling screw facing up. Now use the screwdriver to remove the screw. You are doing this so that the fluid inside does not leak out.
Now, fill the syringe with the compass oil and put it inside the compass. You may do a more precise work if you have a needle attached to the syringe. Fill the compass with the fluid.
Cleaners Whetstone point out, that sometimes an air bubble may accumulate in the compass. To remove it, either put the syringe with the needle inside, and suck the bubble itself out, or fill it with the oil instead. Also, if you feel up to it, you may change all of the fluid within the compass. This is not necessary, but you may do it anyway. Use the syringe to extract the oil from within, and then to fill it back up. It is as simple as that.
Finally, put the “filling screw” back and screw it. For any damage repair, anything you don’t feel confident about, go see a specialist. Do not attempt to disassemble the compass on your own.
